Boat-based wildlife watching

When we think of marine wildlife viewing activities, such as whale watching, we automatically imagine operations conducted by boat. In fact, this is the most common way to observe wildlife in the marine environment. It provides convenient access to a variety of animal species whose habitats are further away from the shore and includes wildlife-watching tour boats, motor boats, sail boats, ferries, catamarans and yachts, as well as small recreational boats like kayaks.

Swim-with programmes that offer close encounters with marine wildlife are usually conducted by boat from which the tour participants enter the water. In some programmes they can swim freely, while in others they are attached to mermaid-lines that give support to inexpert swimmers.
